Tech Checklist: Work From Home Essentials

With many businesses shifting to Work From Home operations at this time, the importance of building an efficient and productive home office space has become even more essential. In case youā€™re wondering about the basic equipment and technology youā€™ll need to create a reliable every day workspace, weā€™ve got you covered with this checklist:

1. Computer

When it comes to computers, the best fit varies from person to person. Figure out what your priorities are and go from there. You can also consult with us if youā€™re not too familiar with building computers or what kind of components will suit you best.

Those who want to set up a dedicated station or need a high-powered, multi-monitor rig might prefer getting a desktop, while those who tend to move around the house a bit more might prefer the portability of a laptop.

2. Keyboard

The keyword when it comes to choosing a keyboard is comfort, especially if your job requires you to be typing a lot the whole day. Mechanical or membrane, tactile or click switches, wireless or wired ā€“ it all depends on what feels best for you.

3. Mouse and Mousepad

Just like with keyboards, your mouse should also feel comfortable to use for prolonged periods of time. Mice come in various shapes that cater to all kinds of grip and ergonomic preferences, so youā€™ll have plenty of options to choose from. A mousepad will also help make things a lot easier since your mouse will glide easily on its surface.

4. Headset

Since the headset will probably be resting on your ears all day, you should choose one that fits you comfortably. Aside from audio quality, one crucial aspect you have to consider is the quality of the headsetā€™s mic. This will make a world of difference if you have to attend online meetings and talk to clients regularly.

5. Backup Drive (EHD)

Having a backup drive will help you secure and protect all of the important data and files you need for work. You can use cloud-based backup services but having a physical backup drive will make things easier when it comes to emergencies or when you donā€™t have access to the internet. In the case of a computer failure, an external hard drive will really come in handy.

6. Printer

If youā€™re looking for more convenience and you have a little cash to spare, you can opt for a wireless printer instead. That way, you can print from anywhere (if you move your laptop around sometimes) and you can print from any device too ā€“ even your phone.

7. Wireless Router

Having a good wireless router will help deliver high-quality wi-fi signals more reliably and give you a longer and better wi-fi range. This will help you switch to other devices like your phone when necessary, and will make moving around with a laptop or a tablet easier.

8. Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS)

In case the electricity suddenly goes out for some reason, a UPS will provide you with backup power for a limited amount of time. During emergencies, this will help give you a small window of time where you can save and backup any unsaved work and safely shut down your equipment.

A few reminders:

  • Find a comfortable space that will help you avoid distractions and become more productive. Hint: itā€™s not your bed!
  • The less cables you have to worry about, the better. We donā€™t want things to get all tangled up while moving around.
  • Keep your favorite drinks and snacks close and remember to take breaks too.

Disinfecting your PC Peripherals

As the current Covid-19 situation continues to unfold, governments, professionals, and regular citizens from all over the world are ramping up and highlighting the importance of cleanliness, hygiene, and regular disinfection. Now more than ever, keeping safe and healthy is important ā€“ and one aspect that shouldnā€™t be overlooked is how we clean our gadgets.

We use technology every day for work and for play, which makes items like PC peripherals potential carriers of germs. Luckily, weā€™ve created some quick guides to help you clean your keyboards, mice, and headsets regularly. Check them out below!

Disinfecting your Keyboard

What Youā€™ll Need

  • A can of compressed air or a soft brush
  • Disinfectant wipes or a soft cloth and isopropyl alcohol

Steps:

  • Unplug your keyboard and start by giving it a few shakes to remove any loose dirt.
  • If you have a can of compressed air, you can use it to remove dust, crumbs, and other debris in between keys. You can also use a brush with soft bristles.
  • Disinfect the keyboard by gently wiping the surface with disinfectant wipes
Tip: If you don't have wipes, you can use a soft cloth that's slightly dampened with isopropyl alcohol.
  • Make sure to wipe the top and sides of each key, plus the surface, sides, and bottom of the keyboard.

Disinfecting your Mouse

What Youā€™ll Need

  • Disinfectant wipes or a soft cloth and isopropyl alcohol

Steps:

  • Unplug your mouse and remove the batteries (if it has any).
  • Turn the mouse upside down and roll the scroll wheel to remove any particles that might be inside.
  • Disinfect the mouse by gently wiping it with disinfectant wipes.
Tip: If you donā€™t have wipes, you can use a soft cloth thatā€™s slightly dampened with isopropyl alcohol.
  • Make sure to wipe all the surfaces, even the bottom of the mouse.

Disinfecting your Headset

What Youā€™ll Need

  • Small cloth and paper towels
  • Mild soap
  • Rubbing alcohol or hand sanitizer
  • Cotton buds

Steps:

  • Remove the ear pads and wipe the exterior of the headset down with a small cloth. Make sure the cloth is dampened with some soap and warm water.
  • Wipe the earpads dry with some paper towels then leave them to air dry completely.
  • Dampen a small cloth with alcohol or hand sanitizer and gently wipe down the exterior if the ear pads.
  • Soak a cotton bud in alcohol or hand sanitizer and use it to clean the nooks and crevices of the ear pads.
  • Dab some alcohol or hand sanitizer over the surface of the foam mesh and gently rub the left and right earpads together. This will help kill off bacteria and dislodge any dirt or grime.
  • Leave your earpads to air dry before reattaching them to the headset.

Remember to clean your peripherals regularly and stay safe! You can visit our page or EasyPC Community PH for more guides like these!
